The Truth About “Cruelty-Free”

Did you know just because a product label says “cruelty-free” or “not tested on animals” it doesn’t make it true?

Any company can put those statements on their labels because there are no laws or government regulations to guarantee they’re true. “Not tested on animals” might mean the final product wasn’t tested on animals, but that might not be true for a component — or several components — of the product.

So how can you be sure you’re buying makeup and skincare products that really are cruelty-free? Look for the Leaping Bunny logo.

The Leaping Bunny Program was created by a coalition of eight animal protection groups to provide a solid standard for beauty products. This program ensures that no new animal testing was used during product development, in a company’s laboratory or by its ingredient suppliers.

The good news is that tons of companies — including Nourish Organic — have joined the Leaping Bunny Program, so finding legitimate cruelty-free products is really pretty easy.

Look for the logo on product labels when you’re shopping or check out the Leaping Bunny shopping guide for a list of cruelty-free brands.
