Protect Your Skin This Winter

Winter is just a month away and as the weather starts to change, and so should your skin care regimen. It's the perfect time to prep your skin for the winter months ahead and here are some helpful tips to keep your skin feeling soft and glowing.

Exfoliate to get your skin looking fresh and healthy.

Facing sudden changes in temperature during winter leaves a drying effect on your skin. By keeping the skin stimulated, you'll encourage healthy turnover of cells and stimulate muscle tone. When you exfoliate properly, you remove the layer of dead skin cells and prep your skin to absorb moisturizer. If you have oily skin, you may want to gently buff your face a few times a week, while sensitive skin needs less frequent exfoliation.

Try the new and improved Advanced Facial Cleansing Brush designed for the face, neck, and body. This eco-friendly, advanced 2-speed facial cleansing tool will cleanse, exfoliate and massage in one easy step. It fits in the size of your palm and is safe to use in the shower.

Sunscreen is a must-have for all-year, all-seasons.

Even in cold temperatures, don't skip sunscreen because the sun's harmful rays are just as strong. Your skin in winter can be more sensitive to the sun than your summer skin, and with all that sunshine reflecting off the snow and ice, it's no different than spending a summer day by the lake or ocean. Use a lotion with SPF 30 or higher every morning especially if you spend a lot of time outdoors – and don't forget to protect your lips because the skin is thinner and very sensitive.

If you have dry and irritated skin due to too much sun exposure, consider the Nourish Fair Trade Certified™ Organic Shea Butter. It provides intense moisture to help soothe irritated and chapped skin. It can be used everywhere, including elbows, knees, feet, hands, face and hair.

Have more than one type of moisturizer.

Your spring and summer moisturizer may not be the right moisturizer for winter, and what's best for your face may not work for your hands and nails.

A moisturizer that's oil-base will create a protective layer on the skin to help retain more moisture. Try the Organic Cream-to-Oil Skin Solve, a blend of shea, coconut oil, sweet orange and rose hip can be applied neatly all over the body without the greasy residue. This skin solve is ideal for packing in your bag to help treat dry hands and nails.

If you can't take a heavy moisturizer on your face but want a stronger formula to combat the dryness of winter, consider a serum followed by a lighter-weight cream. The Pure Hydrating Argan Face Serum with apricot and rose hip, is designed to deeply hydrate and reveal smoother, softer and more supple skin with improved tone. Moroccan Argan oil, packed with restorative omega fatty acids, intensely hydrates and replenishes. Or try the multi-benefit Overnight Recovery Serum with argan oil and evening primrose oil, replenishes essential nutrients to the skin and works to deeply nourish, replenish hydration, and promote cell turnover to reveal fresher, brighter skin in the morning.

Reduce the heat in your shower and lock in moisture.

When it's cold outside, nothing feels better than a nice hot shower! However, frequent hot showers not only washes away your skin's natural oils, but it can also lead to dry and itchy skin and make existing skin conditions worse like eczema or dandruff. It's better for your skin, scalp and hair, to turn the temperature down and pat down your body leaving a bit of water on your skin to help lock in hydration with the right skin moisturizer.

Cleanse your body with the Moisturizing Cream Body Wash, an organic hydrating blend of soothing aloe, nourishing coconut milk, antioxidant-rich Vitamin E and a proprietary blend of moisturizing essential oils. It's very gentle for sensitive skin and comes in seven refreshing scents.

Lock in the moisture with the rejuvenating organic Argan Butter or Rose Butter. These silky body butters are fast-absorbing, deeply nourishing that leaves your skin looking healthy and feeling super-soft. With regular use, it helps to improve skin's elasticity, texture, and tone.

Spring Clean Your Daily Regimen to Get Ready for a Healthy Summer!

Detox Your Daily Regimen

We’re smack dabbed in the middle of Spring, which is the perfect time to prepare for the upcoming summer season. That’s right – It’s spring cleaning time! And we don’t just mean your home. Spring is a great time to take a look at your skin and personal care products, and switch out any products lingering in your cabinet that contain synthetic ingredients, harmful chemicals, or have simply expired.

One of the most important changes one can make in their daily regimen to ensure they are using healthy products is to switch from using a conventional deodorant or antiperspirant to using a natural, non-toxic deodorant. Conventional deodorants and antiperspirants contain a slew of questionable ingredients. Every day we slather these products under our arms, an area where many lymph nodes lie close to the surface of the skin.

Spring is the time to make the switch, before the hot, humid summer months kick in. Take a few minutes to learn the ingredients to look for – and avoid – on antiperspirants and deodorants, and some tips and tricks to make the transition to healthy deodorant a breeze.

7 Deodorant Ingredients to Avoid:

  1. Aluminum – Steer clear of this. Aluminum is the active ingredient in most antiperspirants, aluminum salts prevent us from sweating when aluminum ions are drawn into the cells that line the sweat ducts, causing the cells to swell and squeeze the ducts closed so sweat cannot get out. Already sounds a little sketchy, doesn’t it? We need to sweat! Aluminum has been linked to breast cancer and neurological disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease.
  1. Talc – Absorbs moisture; Suspected link to cancer, particularly ovarian cancer.
  1. Parabens – Preservatives; Suspected endocrine disruptors and xenoestrogens (alters cellular function), they disrupt our delicate hormonal balance. Linked to cancer, birth defects, and organ toxicity.
  1. Propylene Glycol – Synthetic petrochemical mix, made from the same chemical used to make anti-freeze; Can cause damage to the central nervous system, liver and heart; Provokes allergic reactions.
  1. Phthalates– Multi-functional chemicals used as solvents; Suspected of causing birth defects and organ damage.
  1. Triclosan – Antimicrobial agent; Powerful endocrine disruptor, evidence suggests impacts thyroid function. Classified as a pesticide by the FDA, and classified as a probable carcinogen by the EPA.
  1. Artificial Fragrance – Fragrances that are created chemically by man; Known to accumulate in the body, and linked to developmental toxicity, allergies, and sensitivities.

This all sounds very scary. And it could be. The truth is that the verdict is still out as to exactly how these ingredients affect our systems both in the short and the long terms. But with potential side effects such as these, we at Nourish Organic think, “why chance it?!” We are proud to offer organic, non-toxic deodorants that are clinically proven to work.

What to Expect When Switching from Conventional to Natural Deodorant

“The struggle is real.” A lot of well-intentioned people try to make the switch to natural, but they just can’t stick with it. Why?

Transitioning from conventional deodorant/antiperspirants to natural deodorants can be a process. Your body needs to “detox” off of aluminum and talc, among other ingredients. As you’re trying a new, non-aluminum formula, your body is working hard to rid itself of the foreign materials that have accumulated. So be patient. Don’t expect your natural deodorant to work at 100% optimal efficacy on Day 1. Or Day 7, for that matter. Not only does it have to do the job of combatting odor and wetness, but it’s also dealing with a pretty funky (no pun intended) environment as you detox. A few things you can do to make the transition process as smooth as possible, and to cut down the time it takes:

  • Start in the spring (or any cooler month) – Make the switch before the hottest summer months so that your new natural formula is already working for you before the weather puts it to the test.
  • Drink lots of water – Flushing the system helps to remove toxins more quickly.
  • Eat well – If you want to smell less, start with how you’re fueling your system. Particularly during this critical transition time, the cleaner your fuel, the less odor you’ll produce.
  • Help the process along – Gently exfoliate the armpit area a few times a week. You can even apply a clay mask to pull out toxins if you’d like.

Detox Symptoms to Expect (but Will Go Away):

  • Strange odor (it’s not B.O., it’s D.O. – detox odor)
  • Excess sweating
  • A general feeling that something is “off” or “different” in your system

Once you get past the detox period, you’ll be surprised at how much less you smell and sweat, naturally. AND, how well Nourish Organic deodorants work!

  3. Use your fingertips to smooth flyaways on dry, styled hair.
  4. Helps reduce the appearance of stretch marks. Just liberally rub Skin Solve on your skin as often as necessary.
  5. Soften the roughness on your heels and elbows. Gently massage into the skin until fully absorbed.
  6. Nourish your cuticles. Apply the product freely where the skin meets the nail.
