You've likely heard that many bath and beauty product can contain parabens but do you know what they are and why they should be avoided?
What Are Parabens?
A Paraben is any ester of parahydroxybenzoic acid. Parabens are sometimes naturally found in foods like barley and onions, however, synthetic Parabens are a popular preservative used in many cosmetic products and it’s estimated that 75% of products on the market contain this substance.
Why Should Parabens
The parabens used in cosmetics are synthetically derived from petrochemicals. Parabens are quickly absorbed into the skin and can mimic estrogen, disrupting natural hormones. These substances have been found in breast cancer cells which indicates an association between cancer and parabens.
A study of tissue from 40 breast cancer patients shows that parabens are present in 99% of tissue sampled.
It is clear that parabens have no place in a healthy bath and body product and ensuring your products are free of these preservatives will lessen your exposure and possible side effects from long-term usage. Currently there are no restrictions on usage and so the onus is on consumers to choose wisely and vote for safer products with their purchasing power!
Nourish Organic is 100% chemical-free, ensuring that their products do not contain parabens.
